Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., joined colleagues in introducing a bipartisan resolution declaring this week, Jan. 22 through 26, 2018, as "National School Choice Week" to raise public awareness of education options in the United States.

"Parents are the best positioned to make important decisions regarding the education of their children, and "National School Choice Week' highlights the variety of education options available for students and families in K-12 education," said Isakson, who is a member of the Senate committee that oversees education and is the former chairman of the Georgia Board of Education. "Congress worked hard to return control of education to parents and local school boards in the Every Student Succeeds Act that became law in 2015, and this resolution emphasizes that government should support parents' freedom to choose the right academic environment for their children, whether public, private, charter, home school or online academy."

The resolution, cosponsored by 21 senators in addition to Isakson, congratulates students, parents, teachers and school leaders from kindergarten through 12th grade education environments of all varieties for their persistence, achievements, dedication and contributions to society in the U.S. It also encourages all parents to learn more about the education options available for their children.

In addition to Isakson, the "National School Choice Week Resolution" is cosponsored by Senators Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., John Boozman, R-Ark., Richard Burr, R-N.C., Bill Cassidy, R-La., John Cornyn, R-Texas, Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Steve Daines, R-Mont., Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Cory Gardner, R-Colo., Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Ron Johnson, R-Wis., James Lankford, R-Okla., John McCain, R-Ariz., Rand Paul, R-Ky., David Perdue, R-Ga., Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Tim Scott, R-S.C., Thom Tillis, R-N.C., Pat Toomey, R-Pa., Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Todd Young, R-Ind.
